Martin Blaxall - Group Head of Corporate Communications
- National Grid Transco plc
I first started work with Simon Howlett in the summer
of 2000 when he was part of the team which was established
to ensure the appropriate web presence for the Lattice
Group which was demerged from BG Group in October 2000.
In particular, Simon took the lead role in ensuring
the Group had both intranet and internet sites up and
running on Day 1. Both had to be developed to an exacting
timetable and to a high standard; Simon was crucial
to ensuring that both were successfully launched on
time.
Simon was indispensable to the project. He worked closely
with our in-house service provider for the Lattice intranet
and with the external provider for the internet, liaising
with the designers of the sites and the other people
in my team - the communications professionals - who
were providing the content. It was a role he filled
with professionalism, enthusiasm and great ability.
The skill which I particularly valued was Simon's ability
to explain the technical issues to the layman and translate
the communications' requirements into a technical specification.
After the merger took effect, Simon took the lead in
developing, either on his own or in partnership with
others within Lattice, Righteous Solutions or other
third-parties, applications that met a business need.
He always worked to provide high quality dependable
solutions rather than promote applications that sought
a need. As such his expertise, approachability, good
humour and ability to deliver was both relied on and
highly regarded by those in the Lattice Group and our
various partners.
While remaining a Righteous employee, Simon became
a valued and integral part of the Lattice Corporate
Communications team, and would be the first to point
out any potential conflicts of interest that arose in
his work. He could be trusted completely. He promoted
the use and development of the Lattice intranet among
staff, again developing solutions that met the needs
of the user. So far as the website was concerned, he
guided the development of a user-friendly content management
system which both improved the efficiency of the site
and its effectiveness, while also reducing its running
costs.
On the announcement of the merger with National Grid
in spring 2002 to create National Grid Transco, Simon
again worked professionally with the National Grid in-house
team and appointed providers. He helped ensure the new
Group had its Group internet and intranet sites up and
running on Day 1 of the merged Group. In doing so, he
took the lead in developing the Group's website which
was subsequently rated as the number one in the FTSE
100 in an independent survey.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Simon as
an employee and colleague.

"When our company separated from Transco in November
of 2001, Simon Howlett, working on behalf of Righteous
Solutions was responsible for designing and publishing
a new independent intranet site for our employees. We
wanted a site that would be aesthetically pleasing but
most importantly user friendly.
'Click' is a vital interface within our business, as
industrial staff access the site as remote users to
gain access to the systems and information they need
to complete their day to day tasks. The intranet contains
several crucial links that were tested fully to ensure
they were operational on launch of the site.
Simon worked closely with our PR and Communications
manager Frances Davies to ensure the site met all our
requirements. The result was a very clean and quick
to access site that is now widely used throughout our
organisation. The site has met the needs of our business
from both an IS and Communications standpoint."
